In school, students spend most of their time with their teachers. The relationship that the student has with teachers plays a huge role in understanding particular subjects and the general development of a child.
Everyone of us had a favorite teacher at some point of our school life. Chances are that we performed well in the subject that was taught by our best teacher in comparison to other disciplines. We may have developed a stronger liking for the teacher because of different reasons. This may include our love for the subject, their good way of teaching, few punishments, or just some other liking out of the blues.
Both the teacher and the student have a role to play in cultivating a positive relationship inside and out of the class. Below, we go deeper into how to forge strong relationships between the teachers and the students and the role of each party in the relationship.
Students have different rates of understanding when it comes to learning and achieving their educational goals. There are students who grasp concepts very quickly and do not need to revise the concepts to stick in their heads.Others have to be taught using different strategies for them to get the concepts and then there are those who come to school just for entertainment. A good relationship alone cannot change such children. Sometimes a stern warning is all they need to get serious.
Teachers should monitor students on a continuous basis and take into account any difficulties they may have. These challenges could be fear, confusion or some physical learning difficulty. Once the teacher is aware of the problem that the child has, he or she should approach the issue reassuringly so that the kid can feel secure and express his or her problem to the teacher.
Communication establishes a significant connection between the teacher and the student. The more the student can communicate with the teacher without fear, the better the relationship. The teacher may not understand all the problems of his/her students but can help in difficulties that cause poor learning.
Students, especially those from metropolitan cities come from different backgrounds and cultures. Their ideals in life and upbringing may be different. There may be big differences especially in cases where the teacher and the student come from diverse communities. It is important that the teacher knows that such children have a sense of belonging and are looking for an identity. If the teacher shows that he/she understands and respects the culture of the student, there will be a better relationship between the two.
The teacher’s approach to correcting mistakes and punishment also affects the learning experience and the relationship with teachers. For example, teachers that yell at the students instill fear and make them feel rejected. Students that are shouted at may not express themselves in class and may have problems understanding concepts taught.
Sometimes a teacher has to be firm and stern to students who are not serious about their work. However, yelling and hitting the students doesn’t make matters any better. It is important that students understand what mistakes they have done and what action will be taken against them. This is good for their relationship.
The teacher should not correct a student by calling him or her names that the rest of the students find amusing.
Children that are teased or bullied in the classroom often isolate themselves and may find it hard to learn.
Some names are demeaning and destructive and may wreck a child’s self-esteem. It is important that children feel valued in and out of class.
To cap it, all students should respect their teachers for smooth learning. Even when the teacher tries to show warmth and care, he or she should be firm against misbehavior during the lesson. There are remedial measures for students who fail to do their work, are always making fun in class, or are arrogant. The aim of being in class is to learn. This should supersede any other goal. However, the punishment should be done in a way that corrects bad behavior and molds the character of the child rather than dehumanize him.
